Stivers Heating & Air Conditioning FAQ

Have an HVAC-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!
  • When should I have my furnace or air-conditioner serviced / cleaned?

Usually, all manufacturers recommend service and check for the safety device every year. A gas furnace can produce carbon monoxide and could be dangerous if not maintained properly.

However, we believe that the ideal time for your furnace to be serviced is in the fall, which is before you switch it on. The refrigerant (R-22, 410A) levels need to be checked to make sure it is operating efficiently. Heat pumps should be serviced in both the spring and the fall every year.

  • When is it the right time to replace my air conditioner? How do I know that I need a larger unit?

Many factors are considered while determining the size of the AC unit. It includes the size of your home, insulation levels, and ductwork size.

Blindly installing a larger air conditioner is not the right thing to do. Along with being expensive, it may not fare well on your comfort scale as well. It is better to call us to determine the exact kind of air conditioner you'll need.

  • What is the ideal temperature to set on a thermostat?

Well, it is subjective, and it also depends on a lot of factors. However, research shows us that at about 75 degrees, people feel more comfortable and cozy.

If you are looking to cool your home, better set it at 70 degrees. Again, there is no such thing as an ideal temperature setting. The temperature that you are comfortable with is the right temperature for your home.

  • How often should I change my air filter?

There are many different types of air filters.

For the standard 1" fiberglass filter, you should change it out every 30 days. A washable version of this filter is also available. Instead of throwing it out, you can clean it every 30 days.

The 1" pleated filter may need to be changed every three to four weeks.

The 4'' media filters should be changed approximately after every six months.

  • How long is my HVAC system expected to last?

Well, if you have yearly maintenance done by a qualified HVAC technician, as recommended by the manufacturer, your AC is supposed to last anywhere between 12 to 15 years. A gas furnace should last anywhere between 20 to 25 years.

  • Am I supposed to change my indoor coil?

Yes is the answer if you are replacing your heat pumps or air conditioners. Efficiency ratings for an air conditioner or a heat pump are based on the performance as part of a matched system. If only the outdoor portion is changed, the savings and efficiency may be less than that of a matched system.

  • What is Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer?

Only 5 percent of professionals in the HVAC industry enjoy this rare honor of being a Factory Authorized Dealer.

One is supposed to meet high standards of HVAC services and has to undergo scrutiny to get this distinction.

However, high standards are not limited to technical expertise but also customer service and business practices.

We take pride in being Louisville’s oldest Bryant dealer!

  • What is an air conditioner?

Air-conditioning is the process of altering the properties of air, primarily temperature and humidity, to make it more favorable.

In general, air-conditioning is any form of technological cooling, heating, ventilation, or disinfection that modifies the condition of air.

An air conditioner is a home appliance, system, or mechanism designed to change the air temperature and humidity within an area.

The cooling is typically done using a simple refrigeration cycle, but sometimes evaporation is also used. It's common for comfort cooling in buildings and motor vehicles.

In construction, the complete system of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning is referred to as “HVAC”.

The concept evolved for Egypt, where reeds hung in windows had water trickling down. This evaporation cooled the air blowing through the windows while adding humidity.

In ancient Rome, water from aqueducts was circulated through the walls of certain houses to cool them down. In medieval Persia, cisterns and wind towers were used to cool the building during hot summers.

Advancement in chemistry during the 19th century and the electrical revolution led to the first electrical air-conditioning. It was invented and used by Willis Haviland Carrier. In 1920, residential air-conditioning was introduced.
